Clarinet Choir Composed or Arranged by Paul Harvey

El Torneo (The Tournament) by Paul Harvey depicts the events of a mediaeval joust in four movements: Entrada de los Caballeros (The entry of the knights), La Justa (The joust), which features thundering hooves and shouts from the crowd, Lamento para los Heridos (Lament for the wounded), an evocative duet between solo Eb and Bb clarinets, and Triunfo de los Vencedores (Triumph of the victors), a merry romp for the whole choir, featuring the heavy brigade in a peasant dance. This c. 10 minute work was originally written in 1976 for La Banda de Cobla de Barcelona, a Spanish street band comprising an exotic combination of reed and brass instruments. The Clarinet Choir version was arranged by the Composer in 1999. A Saxophone Choir version is also available.

Paul's other major original composition for clarinet choir is Dances of Atlantis, commissioned by John Denman for the University of Arizona. The original idea of the title was to suggest "Mid-Atlantic" associations, but the folk dance style hints at a latterday Dances of Galanta, collected by a submarine Kodaly from a fabulous lost continent. The work is in 3 continuous sections, with the middle section featuring alternating trios of soloists - 3 Bb versus the exotic combination of alto, bass and contra..

Barnstormers' Rock, Happijazz, Jollipop, The Keel Rock and Rockabelly are all short, lively pieces to get the audience tapping their feet. Rockabelly was originally composed for the Clarinetwise playing day in Nottingham when a troupe of belly-dancers entertained the gathering - all behind Paul's back whilst conducting! Barnstormers' for the first World Bass Clarinet Convention in 2005.

A particular specialty has been the arrangement for Clarinet Choir of a number of the most famous operatic Overtures:

From the time of Weber comes an arrangement of Joseph Kò ffner's Introduction, Theme & Variations, which was originally his clarinet quintet Op. 32 published in 1815. The solo part is shared between first, second and third clarinets, but is also provided complete in transposition for the optional Eb clarinet. It consists of a 20-bar Adagio, a theme and 6 variations, and an Allegro assai, which commences as the seventh variation, but develops into a separate Finale by the introduction of new material.

The Soprano Concertino was a showpiece for Paul's virtuosity at the height of his powers. The Baritone Concertino demonstrates just how versatile the instrument can be - when not confined to rhythm and harmonic roots, it can be both rumbustious and lyrical!
